Google Scholar Labs is an experimental, AI-powered search tool from Google Scholar, launched in November 2025. Instead of the familiar keyword search bar, you search the Google Scholar database through a chatbot: you phrase your query as an ordinary question and can follow up with clarifying questions. The tool analyzes the key topics and aspects of your question and returns relevant papers, each with a short explanation of why it fits.

For translators and writers, the value is in searching by a question’s intent rather than keywords. A query like “Has anyone published on…” can surface relevant articles that would be hard to reach with a standard keyword search. It can be handy when you’re scoping a review or getting your bearings in a new topic.

One honest caveat: it is not the tool for term-frequency analysis. The chatbot itself will tell you so if you ask. Keep in mind that Scholar Labs is experimental and has limited access. It’s available to signed-in users and, for now, works in English.
